We begin by reviewing the organization’s goals and the degree to which its leadership is either enhancing the prospects of achieving those goals or creating hurdles that inhibit those prospects. A review of this assessment with management is often an interesting experience in which the reactions range from “We know that but didn’t know what to do about it.” to “Are you kidding; that can’t be the case.” We work with management to agree on a description of the current state, an outline of changes that are needed and a case for making those changes.
